Blog Tour Event: Thumbing Through Thoreau

It's about: I was very excited to get an email asking if I would review this very unique book, Thumbing Through Thoreau. It isn't like any other books we've reviewed on here -- it's a collection of some of American transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau's most quotable quotes, taken from Walden and Civil Disobedience and also some of his journals and letters. Separated into three sections -- (Society & Government, Spirituality & Nature, and Love) -- each quotation is accompanied by a black and white nature illustration by Jay Luke and Ren Adams, created specifically for this book.

Here is the book trailer for your viewing pleasure:

I thought: All in all, I thought Kenny Luck chose a great collection of Thoreau's quotes, and his dedicated search of Thoreau's various works appears to have been done thoroughly and with the proper amount of reverence and respect for one of America's most influential writers. The nature of the illustrations stays true to the spirit of Thoreau, though just as a personal preference, I preferred the light, almost Japanese styled illustrations of Ren Adams to the more heavy-handed drawings by Jay Luke. For the nature lover, this visually pleasing collection would make an excellent coffee table book.

Verdict: Stick it on the shelf

Warnings: None

Connie - we are so pleased that you are a part of the blog tour for 'Thumbing Through Thoreau.' Thank you for sharing the book with your blog readers.

I'm always glad to hear the comment "it isn't like any other books we've reviewed" - that means we're doing our job :)

And yes, you are right, it entailed a "dedicated search of Thoreau's various works" - Kenny spent many hours in the library accumulating this collection.

Saying that "this visually pleasing collection would make an excellent coffee table book" is exactly what we hope to achieve with it.

Best wishes,
Nicole

I don't know how this book managed to escape my attention in the first place!? I love both Emerson and Thoreau's work and I love love love quotes too! And now that I read your raving review about it it definitely needs to go on my wishlist or rather my to-buy list as I'm not confident enough that I'll actually win it. But that's ok, because the simple fact of having been introduced to this book on your blog is wonderful - so thank you :-) !
This sounds like the perfect inspiration for my periodic blog feature: Sunday Transcendentalist Quote. Thanks for letting me know about it. Like Birgit, I'll put it on my buy list since it's too important to rely on winning it.
