Top Ten Tuesday: Rewind

via Mint Tea and a Good Book
Woah!  It's been a while since I did a Top Ten Tuesday.  I've been looking forward to this "Rewind" week and having the luxury of choosing whichever topic I wanted.  I think I'm going to go with my Top Ten Book-to-Film Adaptations.  Most of these are situations where I would actually recommend the movie over the book- rare, I know!

AND  just to mix it up a bit, I'm going to make a game out of it!  If you can name every movie on this list, I will give you... my utmost respect and admirations.  Are you ready for this?  Ok!

Let's start with an easy one:
1.
[That beard may have been my favorite thing about the movie.  Actually, no, Stanley Tucci was my favorite.]

2.

3.

4.

5.

6.

7.

8.

9.

10.

So.... how did you do?  And do you agree that these selections stand up well against the book?  Did you think any of them were actually better?

P.S. - I'm posting the answers in a comment!

Great minds! I picked this topic, too. ;) I think I guessed most of these, although the only one I've actually seen was Everything is Illuminated (despite the fact that Atonement is one of my favorite books - go figure!). Most of the others I haven't seen primarily because the books have been on my to-read list for ages and I just can't bring myself to watch the adaptations first!

I'm impressed that you knew these without seeing the movies! I'd definitely recommend all of them. But I know what you mean about wanting to wait until after reading the books- I try to do that too.
Ok, 1 is Hunger Games I think//10 is The Road?//8 The Pianist? The others I'm lost. You MUST post what they are or I'll go crazy!!

Good job, Isa! You really MUST see 5 and 7. You would appreciate both of them, I think. (The answers are in a comment below.)
I've never heard of 5, and only know 7 from your goodreads reviews, but will definitely try to get around to watching them as soon as I can! Thanks! :)
This IS fun!

I only caught a few though.

3. Everything is Illuminated
5. I am sure I know this, but can't quite get there.

This is a fun list. I'm glad you posted the answers, because I would never have guessed all of them. This is always such a fun subject to talk about with friends. One adaptation that I thought was better than the book was Stardust. I loved that movie, but the book was only ok. I've been meaning to watch a lot of the movies on your list. Maybe I'll get them on Netflix sometime soon.

I have to disagree with you on The Road. I didn't think the book was particularly great, but I really didn't like the movie. The voice-over narration in the movie was done in the voice of the Man, while in the novel the narration is in a much more ambiguous free indirect style. I was disappointed that the movie lost that ambiguity, which I saw as central to the theme. I also thought that the end of the movie was even cheesier than the end of the book. But I know a lot of people who really enjoyed the movie, so maybe that's just me!

Oh, Stardust! I liked the movie and have wondered about the book since I do tend to like Neil Gaiman sometimes. But, given your opinion, I probably won't run out and buy it any time soon. Let me know what you think of the movies on this list if you do netflix them! One or two, at least, are bound to be streaming now.

Yeah, I agree that it's a shame the ambiguity of that narrative voice was lost in the film adaptation of The Road. And yes, the end was perked up a bit, though after watching two hours of sadness and intensity I was personally a little grateful. I think in general I'd put the book and movie on an even level in this case- the acting/casting and visual power of the film really worked for me, and I didn't miss the sparse writing style. (That was one of the few things I didn't enjoy about the book because I'm a prissy fussbucket.)
What a fantastic list! Very fun. New follower via GFC, would love a follow-back :)
